May every sunset bring you peace!
A new year message
A New Year Note
The turn of the year has a way of making time feel strange. You can usually remember the big things that happened, but the year itself still feels smaller than it should.
A lot of people talk about speed at this time of year. How quickly the year went. I’m not sure speed is the right word. It’s more that a lot of days pass without leaving much behind.
Longevity is usually described as how long someone lives. There’s another way of thinking about it:
Longevity is the length of experiencing life.
The difference shows up over time. Some periods are easy to recall. Others compress into almost nothing. It’s not because more happened in one and less in the other. It’s usually because one was lived with more attention than the other.
Busyness causes this. Entire days can disappear into tasks, meetings, messages. Things move forward, but the day itself doesn’t always register. Later, you know you were occupied, but it’s hard to reconstruct much beyond that.
The opposite isn’t being idle, its slowing down and noticing. Noticing what you’re doing while you’re doing it. Noticing where you are. Noticing what caught your eye or what stayed with you for a moment longer than expected.
Over the last 5 years, I’ve found that a habit of building small daily anchors for my attention makes a difference for me. Something that marks the day as having happened. When those anchors exist, looking back feels different. The year doesn’t collapse in the same way.
As the new year begins, this makes the last year real - and I’m able to count the many blessings I received this year.
I’m sharing these in my annual compilation of an idea and a photo from almost every day in 2025. I hope you enjoy some of the same places and ideas that I did via this e-book.
And as said in this sign which I found in Malta this week, May every sunset bring you peace!
Happy New Year.
