America at 250, by the Numbers

What 250 years of American data reveal about progress - the staggering gains, the brutal chapters, and why little of the progress reaches the front page.

The United States just turned 250. 🇺🇸

I’m not American, and neither are most of the people who’ll read this. But this anniversary is a good excuse to do something we rarely do: stop arguing about a country long enough to actually look at the numbers.

So on The Bright Side [podcast on my platform https://www.asgard.news] , we ran the data on two and a half centuries of change — century by century, then decade by decade, then year by year.

Some of it is genuinely hard to believe:

→ US life expectancy: mid-30s in 1776, nearly 80 today
→ Children lost before age five: 4 in 10 around 1800, under 1 in 100 now
→ Americans who farm for a living: 9 in 10 in 1790, about 1 in 50 today
→ The world in extreme poverty: 84% in 1820, under 10% now

And in just the last five years: the first malaria vaccine, CRISPR going from lab to actual cure, two Alzheimer’s drugs after decades of nothing, fusion ignition, reusable rockets, renewables overtaking coal.

We also covered the hard bits - slavery, segregation, the opioid crisis, 2008, the pandemic’s toll. The progress was real, but it was uneven, hard-won, and never inevitable.

The bigger point isn’t really about America. It’s this: measurable progress is real, it compounds over time, and it almost never makes headlines. Which means if you want to see where the world is actually heading, you have to go looking for the trend - not just the 2am doomscroll.
